Regional integration and migration

Regional integration of people across regions of Africa has particular advantages for development of countries and sub-regions. Farafina Institute promotes the regional integration efforts of regional bodies like ECOWAS, SADC, ECCAS, and AU. Based on our expertise, we conduct regular opinion polls and research on the attributes of integration efforts in the field of renewable energy, security, monetary union, and others. Our major clients and partners include ECOWAS, SADC, ECCAS, AU, national governments and agencies, and international organizations.

Program areas

The programs we pursue in the following areas seek to gauge the knowledge and awareness of people. Consequently, our opinion polls will result in the development of a database on all the issue we deal with, from which we seek to make available information to policy and decision-makers and development practitioners. Our data could inform sound decision-making in processes of governance and development. To achieve the objectives and outputs of each focus area, we follow our 5-stage work approach (see 'Work approach').

Regional integration and migration

Agriculture and food security

Agriculture and food security are most significant to tackle poverty in Africa. Malnutrition and food insecurity pose challenges to livelihood, particularly for both urban and rural vulnerable people in Africa. With current climatic changes affecting weather conditions, sustainable agriculture and food security are amongst the major issues confronting Africa today. Farafina Institute conducts surveys on people's opinion on practices, trends, and challenges in agricultural production.

Our data also includes views on the role of state and private industries in agriculture. The themes we investigate, amongst others, include:
- small scale farming/subsistence farming, farmer associations/unions;
- indigenous knowledge in agriculture and environmental issues;
- the role of women in agriculture and food security.

Economy and Finance

International financial institutions, governments and development agencies tend to measure development through indicators such as Gross Domestic Product. Farafina Institute seeks to find out the extent to which these indicators account for human well-being in Africa.

The Institute's work in the fields of economy and finance engages with trends in citizens' satisfaction with the general economic situation, financial services and goods provided by state and private institutions as well as by the informal sector. We focus amongst others, on:
- role of financial institutions;
- financial programs of national governments, NGOs and international organizations and how they work;
- access to credit;
- public attitudes towards financial institutions;
- public awareness on economic trends and opportunities.

Justice and human rights

Justice and human rights are crucial for political stability, social and economic development. We conduct opinion polls on the justice and human rights situation in Africa. The aims of the opinion polls conducted on the basis of questionnaires developed by Farafina Institute are to find out popular knowledge and awareness about what constitutes human rights for people, and the possibilities of defending such rights. They are also to determine the degree of confidence and trust people have in existing institutions and procedures for the protection of human rights. Moreover, our studies provide sound data on communities and social groups that are discriminated against and excluded from development processes. We focus on, amongst other issues, minority or gender related human rights.
